Kareem suffers from migraine headaches and it has been reported that he uses cannabis to reduce the symptoms.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar filed suit and reached a settlement with Karim Abdul-Jabbar, a running back for the Miami Dolphins because he felt Karim, who had also been an athlete at UCLA in football) was sponging off the name he made famous by having the Abdul-Jabbar moniker and number 33 on Dolphins jerseys, even though names are not protectable under United States copyright laws. The running back Karim now goes by Abdul-Karim al-Jabbar. As a result of the suit and settlement the younger Abdul-Jabbar had to change his jersey nameplate to simply 'Abdul' while he played for the Dolphins.

Kareem wore number 33 as a tribute to his favorite football player on the New York Giants when Kareem was in grade school. The player's name was Mel Triplett, who was the blocking back for Frank Gifford, and he wore number 33.
